It’s time to take your hot drinks to the next level with a milk frother. Whether you’re a cappuccino aficionado, hot chocolate fan or simply want to liven up your instant coffee, milk frothers will give your classic brew a creamy barista-style boost.
While some coffee machines will come with built-in milk frothers, most will require you froth your milk separately. Many independent milk frother will also have a wider range of setting for different textures of microfoam or for hot or cold frothed milk, which isn’t usually available for those built into coffee machines.
Having a milk frother will also allow you further versatility from manual espresso brewing methods like moka pots and cafetieres.
Read on for our favourite milk frothers for coffee and hot chocolate, tried and tested by our reviews experts.
Why Buy a Milk Frother?
A milk frother allows you to craft café-style lattes, cappuccinos, and macchiatos at home. The creamy, velvety foam not only enhances the texture but also elevates the flavor of your coffee.
Skip the daily trips to expensive coffee shops. With a milk frother, you can create barista-quality drinks at a fraction of the cost.
A frother isn’t just for coffee. Use it to make hot chocolate, matcha lattes, chai, or even frothy milk for your kids’ drinks.
A milk frother is quick and easy to use. In just a few seconds, you can transform your milk into a rich foam, saving you time on busy mornings.
Control the type of milk, froth density, and drink temperature to suit your preferences. Whether you prefer almond, oat, or regular milk, a frother gives you endless possibilities.
What to look for
A fully automatic frother will froth milk for your coffee at the touch of a button. It is fully automated and requires no user supervision, which allows you to step away from the unit and do other tasks while the milk froths. All you have to do is pour cold milk into the frothing jug, close it, press a button, and you'll have frothed milk in no time. Once frothing is complete, it automatically turns off.
For example, when you are having breakfast at home or entertaining multiple guests, a large-capacity machine can meet your needs at one time without having to operate it multiple times. Large-capacity machines are usually designed with a higher anti-overflow edge, so that the milk will not easily overflow even if it expands when heated. We recommend choosing a model with a capacity of 300ml or more.
A multi-mode frother allows you to expand your drink options, from hot cappuccinos in winter to refreshing iced lattes in summer. This makes it suitable for all seasons and various preferences.
What to avoid
Poor materials can lead to faster wear and tear, leakage, or even health risks from degraded coatings. Frothers without non-stick coatings or detachable parts can create challenges in cleaning, maintenance, and overall longevity. To ensure the best performance, ease of use, and hygiene, it's advisable to choose models that offer these features. This will result in a smoother experience, better frothing results, and a longer-lasting product.
Safety features in a milk frother are not just a luxury—they are essential for preventing accidents, burns, electrical hazards, and other safety concerns. A frother with automatic shut-off, anti-overflow protection, cool-touch exteriors, and other safety measures ensures a safer, more reliable experience. Choosing a frother with these features gives you peace of mind, especially when using it frequently or in a household with children and pets.
Choosing a quieter milk frother enhances your experience, especially in environments where peace and quiet are valued. It helps create a more enjoyable atmosphere during breakfast, when hosting guests, or when making a cup of coffee at any time of day. Additionally, quieter frothers are often indicative of better construction and longer-lasting performance, offering added benefits beyond just noise reduction.

If you’re someone who loves a good latte or frothy cappuccino, the Ocanvas 4-in-1 Automatic Milk Frother might just be the upgrade your kitchen needs.
You can create dense foam, airy foam, cold foam, or just heat milk. Whether it’s for a morning latte or an evening hot chocolate, this little gadget has you covered. Plus, it’s fast—it whips up foam or heats milk in under two minutes, which is great when you’re in a rush. It’s also one of the larger frothers we tested with the capability to make up to 350ml of frothed milk at a time.
The ultra-quiet motor was another pleasant surprise. Unlike some frothers that sound like mini jet engines, this one operates so quietly that it won’t wake anyone up during early morning coffee runs.
Safety features are always a plus, and the automatic shut-off at the perfect milk temperature (65 ± 5°C) ensures you don’t end up with burnt milk or overflowing foam.
All in all, the ergonomic handle, non-stick surfaces, and sleek brushed-steel design make this container not just stylish but also one of the best-value kitchen accessories you can own, combining durability and practicality in a way that feels like a smart investment.

The Breville BMF600XL Cafe Milk Frother is a premium device designed for coffee enthusiasts looking to create café-quality drinks at home.
However, super picky latte drinkers may find the foam doesn’t get super smooth. while the induction heating ensures consistent results, the frothing and heating process is slower than some competing models, which may not be ideal if you want to prepare your coffee quickly in the morning.
While the size and capacity allow for users to froth significantly more milk than with a Nespresso product, the size makes it more difficult to store and harder to leave out on a counter, especially in a smaller kitchen or an apartment. If you’re looking for easy access to your frother in the morning when you make your coffee, this could be a problem.
If you’re looking for a portable model with fast preparation speed, we do not recommend the BMF600XL.

The Nespresso Aeroccino 4 Milk Frother is a sleek and versatile device designed to elevate your coffee experience by creating barista-quality milk froth at home.
One of the biggest downsides of Nespresso milk frothers is the size of the container. The frother has a maximum capacity of approximately 120 ml for froth and 240 ml for hot milk, which may be insufficient for preparing multiple beverages simultaneously.
Another major issue with Nespresso milk frothers is the cleaning process. Unlike other frothers out there, most Nespresso models aren’t dishwasher safe, and you can’t fully submerge them in water either. This means you’re stuck hand-washing them, which is honestly a hassle. Their small size doesn’t help either—it can be tricky to get them properly cleaned by hand.
Durability seems to be a bit of a hit-or-miss with this frother. Some people have mentioned that it started acting up or losing performance after just a few months, which makes you wonder how long it’s really built to last.
If you’re looking to make coffee for multiple people at the same time and want a high-quality model, it’s best to avoid this one.
